Sometimes the bikes are stripped of their gears, seats and wheels to deter being stolen or tampered with. Ghost bikes displayed throughout the Valley, however, have thus far been respected as solemn symbols of remembrance.
Ghost bikes are often donated by family members and friends. Sometimes, "junk" bikes are donated by bike shops that have already been stripped of all their crucial parts so that just the frame can be spray painted white.
